Detective Russell Welker

Detective Russell “Russ” Welker passed away at his home on May 17, 2009.  Russ was 36 years old.

Before joining the Tempe Police Department, Russ attended Dobson High School and graduated from ASU with a Bachelors Degree.

Russ joined the Tempe Police Department on November 27, 1998. Russ had the unique honor of working at the same time with his father, Terry Welker, a 30+ year veteran of the Tempe Police Department.  Although retiring before the event ever occurred, Terry used to predict one day he’d have to work for Russ.

During his tenure with the Department, Russ worked in the Patrol Division before moving to the Criminal Investigations Division.

While serving as a Detective, Russ specialized in Auto Theft Investigations even serving time on the Auto Theft State Task Force.

Outside of work Russ was a loving husband and father to his wife of 11 years, Kathrine and two daughters Cassie (6) and Brooke (4).  Russ was also a devoted member of the LDS church previously serving a two year Spanish speaking mission.

Russ’ family presented a thank you video to the members of the Tempe Police Department.  The video has been saved online and is viewable here.

This page will be forever dedicated to all the work and dedication Russell Welker provided to his coworkers and family at the Tempe Police Department.  The Tempe Officer’s Association would like to thank the entire Welker family and know we will never forget Russ.
